You can check the time on your phone, so why wear a watch?

Why wear a watch? Historically, watches emerged simply as tools for telling time. Yet, in today’s world where mobile phones are ubiquitous, why do we still wear them? Let’s discuss this today.

1. We must acknowledge the social aspect of watches. At first, I didn’t think much of this, but over time, more and more people would send me photos asking, “Can you tell me what watch he’s wearing?” Even after I identified the watch, they would invariably follow up with, “So, how much does it cost?”

2. The aspect of heritage and sentimental value. For instance, while young women might inherit jewelry from their elders, young men are more likely to inherit a wristwatch. Think of the Omega watch Princess Diana gave to Prince William, or Patek Philippe’s famous slogan: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.”

3. Showcasing personal style. A wristwatch can actually reveal a person’s character and their appreciation for aesthetics. Wearing a watch highlights your personality and taste; a stylish timepiece can instantly transform your look. Whether it’s the exquisite craftsmanship of a European luxury watch, the distinctive design of a trendy brand, or the glamorous allure of a jewelry watch, it allows you to exude charm and become the center of attention.

4. A study from abroad indicates that people who wear watches tend to be more punctual and have a better sense of time. They also often possess a stronger sense of social responsibility, as the watch serves as a constant reminder of time. Furthermore, their emotions tend to be more stable; the act of wearing a watch can foster a sense of inner calm and composure.

5. Why do the wealthy love buying watches? It might seem hard to understand why so many high-achievers spend hundreds of thousands, millions, or even tens of millions on a small timepiece. These individuals are clearly brilliant, yet their actions seem so irrational. There are four underlying reasons for this.

1. First and foremost, a wristwatch is fundamentally a consumer product—specifically, a luxury good. All luxury items carry a social dimension, and watches are no exception. To put it bluntly, a watch is a status symbol that can quickly bridge social gaps. To put it even more plainly: it’s a way to look cool and stylish.

2. Secondly, among all consumer goods, watches hold their value exceptionally well, making the cost of ownership quite reasonable. Setting aside cases where prices appreciate and generate profit, consider this scenario: you buy a watch for 1 million, wear it for three years, and then sell it for 900,000. Your total cost amounts to the interest lost on that 1 million over three years plus a 100,000 depreciation loss—essentially spending just over 100,000 to look cool and stylish for three years. Ask yourself: what other luxury item offers such a return? Put simply, a watch allows you to look cool and stylish without breaking the bank.

3. While watches may not qualify as financial investment products in the strict sense, they possess undeniable financial attributes. They can be characterized as low-risk assets—though without principal protection—that offer uncapped potential returns. Moreover, unlike mere digital codes, a watch is a tangible object you can wear to show off your style.

4. Finally, a watch can serve as a “safety net” or talisman. We have often seen tropes in movies where a fleeing mob boss wears a Rolex; indeed, extreme liquidity—on a global scale—is a key attribute of these watches. If you were wearing a Patek Philippe 6002 instead of a Rolex, however, the possibilities would go far beyond merely escaping; you could easily relocate and establish a new base of operations elsewhere. The beauty of it is that you can stage a comeback while still enjoying the watch and looking stylish.

In today’s society, watches embody a multitude of roles: they are jewelry, a store of value akin to gold, a functional tool, and a work of art. What a watch represents ultimately depends on the owner’s primary needs, but the fact remains that these various attributes are always present. Whether you need to make a strong impression at a high-stakes social gathering, seek a hedge against inflation when other investment avenues are lacking, require quick cash, or need to carry startup capital to a new location, a watch is often the ideal choice.
